What do you need to do to get your home ready for Airbnb guests, you ask? When you’re planning your own holiday and letting your place out, there’s a lot to prepare. Relax. We’ve prepared a six step guide for you to get your home ready, ensuring guests have everything they need for the duration of their stay.
1. Clear the Clutter
If you’ve already done your spring cleaning, this step should be a breeze. Make sure you remove all visible clutter in your space – especially in the living room, bedrooms and bathrooms. First impressions count, and you’ll want to make sure guests enjoy their stay from the beginning for good reviews.
Clearing the clutter also means guests will have more space to keep big bags without crowding the area or moving your things. Luggage usually serves as a guest’s personal closet for the stay, so expect that they’ll need room to lay out suitcases on the floor.
However, do keep personal touches that give your home its unique charm. Unless you’re particularly sentimental about your books, figurines and other paraphernalia, leave pretty plants and quirky knick-knacks on display to give your home a distinct personality. Remember, your guests came to experience local living!
2. Leave Instruction Manuals
Stepping into someone’s home for the first time can be intimidating because it’s difficult to know how appliances work and where things go. Save your guests the confusion by leaving instructions for them to follow for when they want to prepare meals, switch on the television or even the water heater. It also means they’re less likely to call you in the middle of the day inquiring about a light switch, and reduce the chances of something getting broken.
Also leave notes on where they can find household items they can use like plates, cups, pots and kitchen towels. Again, it can be difficult to navigate around kitchen cabinets when you’re not used to them.
3. Keep Supplies Complete
Clean sheets on the bed is a given! Keep extra bedding, pillow cases, and blankets at the ready, and where guests can find them in case of need. Store them on a drawer nearby or even at the foot of the bed.
The same goes with bathroom supplies like tissue paper, towels, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, disposable toothbrushes and a first aid kit. While guests usually bring their own personal care kit, it’s always nice to have something prepared for when things don’t go as planned.
4. Make Laundry Easy
For guests staying around a week or more, a chance to use the laundry room can be a lifesaver. You can only pack so many clothes in one suitcase and an Airbnb home should always allow for some washing. Keep the detergent, fabric conditioner and hangers close by as well as a little manual on using the washing machine.
5. Protect Your Home
Keeping your home protected also ensures your guests’ safety during their stay. There are many ways to keep your home secure while you’re away on vacation including smart locks and other handy technology you can control from your phone. Check out our tips for protecting your home on vacation here.
6. Go the Extra Mile
Lastly, it’s always nice to go the extra mile to make your visitors feel at home in your place. From leaving a welcome basket by the dining room to including useful guide maps for interesting sights around town, these small things make the biggest difference on their holiday experience. Of course, don’t forget to include emergency numbers and addresses they can contact while they’re in town, as you never know when they might need it. Make sure to include supermarkets and convenience stores for when they need supplies.
