So you’re out doing a spot of window shopping when you spy the sofa of your dreams. It’s the exact shade of millennial pink you wanted – not too salmon or rose looking, but great for pairing with the powder pink cushions you have already. It has these darling ornate rose-gold feet, and it’s in a velvet so plush it feels like it was crafted by the angels themselves. The best part is that for one day only, it’s on sale at a price that means you can afford to indulge in sofa perfection without forgoing meals for the next two months.
However, there is, of course, just one kicker: you don’t have any idea of the measurements of your living room and hallway, so you’re not entirely sure if it’s going to fit in that cozy nook you’ve earmarked, or even through the narrow front door. Do you a) take the risk and buy it anyway, or b) make your peace and say goodbye to it forever?
Thankfully, with the help of Photo Measures, this is an impossible decision that you won’t ever have to make – or so they claim. As part of our App Review series, I’m seeing if this highly acclaimed home decor app is worth the rave reviews its garnered from the masses. Read on for more.
What is Photo Measures?
According to Photo Measures themselves, this app is the ‘easiest’ and ‘most elegant’ way to save measures of rooms on your own phone.
Perfect for both homeowners and design professionals alike, this app is designed for saving and sharing the exact measurements and dimensions of objects and spaces.
How Do I Get Started?
Upon opening the app you will be prompted to add a new photo. There are different categories you can save your photo under, ranging from ‘Favorites’ to ‘Rooms’ and ‘Objects’. You can either choose to import an existing photo from your phone or connect your camera to take a photo within the app.
Once you’ve uploaded your photo, then the measuring can begin. To draw a measure, touch and drag from point A to point B.
Make sure to note down the measurement by tapping on the ‘?’ symbol. Here, you will get a list of measurement units to choose from. You can also choose to add a comment if you’d prefer to note down more information.
The same process goes for angles too. Just make sure to head to the ‘line’ symbol and change it to ‘angle’ on the side.
Once complete, keep pressing the ‘done’ button until you are directed back to the main screen. You can now leave as is, or you can choose to ‘export’ the photo by email as a JPG to share with your designer or contractor.
What Cool Features Does This App Provide?
To be completely honest, that’s kind of all there is to this app – at least on the free ‘lite’ version anyway. There are options to change the appearance of your measured photo. If you click on the line measurement and head to ‘style’, you can control the color and style of the line, as well as the position of the measurement text. You can also control the size of the measurements by pressing on ‘size’ on the main edit page.
Other than that, the app very much does what it says on the tin, with no added frills or fancy.
Is Photo Measures Worth the Download?
As a simple, no-frills measurement app, I think Photo Measures is a handy tool to have on hand if you’re in the middle of the decorating process. The fact that this is a free download also means you have nothing to lose by trying it out.
I would however be hesitant to pay money for the full version – mainly because the lite version has everything that I imagine most of us would need. What’s more, I have some quibbles with the user experience. For instance, it’s actually quite difficult to control the drawing of the line, resulting in uneven lines and lines that don’t exactly match the full length of the photo. Whilst this is hardly a make or break critique, the perfectionist within me would demand more from something I’d forked out dollar for.
Overall, I’d say as a free download, it’s definitely worth a try. However, I’d want to check out the quality of similar apps before committing to purchasing the full version.
