Arguably as iconic as the turkey and sprouts, festive crackers are a Christmas dinner mainstay in the UK and Australia. Traditionally packed with a paper hat, one terrible dad joke and a plastic toy, crackers are a fun addition to a Christmas tablescape. Best of all, they’re super easy to DIY at home – all you need are some toilet rolls, pretty paper and a cracker snap! Check out the video for the full tutorial.
What You Need
Materials ( Makes One Festive Cracker)
STEP 1 – Prepare the toilet roll
* This step can be skipped if your decorative paper is opaque.
Wrap and secure the 10.5cm x 13.8cm colored paper around one toilet roll. Secure the cracker snap inside the toilet roll using tape.
STEP 2 – Prepare the decorative paper
Stick one square of double sided sticky tape at the top of the paper. Then stick one strip of double sided sticky tape lengthwise at the bottom of the paper. Place and secure the prepared toilet roll at the top. Arrange the remaining two toilet rolls either side.
STEP 3 – Roll
Carefully roll the paper and toilet rolls downwards to create a barrel shape. Secure with the tape.
STEP 4 – Twist
Hold the center toilet paper roll, and pull out just one of the end rolls by 4cm. Gripping both rolls firmly, twist to form a bottleneck and secure tightly with ribbon. Remove the end toilet roll.
STEP 5 – Add Gifts
Feed the small gift into the center of the cracker through the open end of the barrel.
STEP 6 – Twist Again
Twist again to form a second bottleneck and secure firmly with ribbon.
