Sometimes all your home needs is a magic touch that can transform your space. It could be something as small as just rearranging the furniture or as extensive as custom making the things that will help you make your home that perfect space you always dreamt of.
Ruthie Staalsen has been creating such beautiful homes since 2002. Her design thinking and experience have been responsible for so many gorgeous transformations, resulting in stunning spaces. Let’s have a look at some of her recent works.
Spanish Style Home
This gorgeous Spanish themed home belongs to a couple who wanted their new house to be a tranquil space. With beautiful views of the front yard, a treed lot and a swimming pool outside, the inside needed to be just as stunning. The husband in the couple is from Spain and wanted to make this house really feel like home.
You can see in this picture the two trademarks of a Spanish style home – the wooden blocks on the ceiling and the wrought iron chandelier above the dining table. The basic structure of this room was a perfect setting for Ruthie to create the space that the owners wanted.
Before taking help with styling their home, the couple had tried some arrangements but it just didn’t work. They had some existing furniture they loved and wanted to be accommodated in the setting, and also did not want to splurge too much on decor.
The couch they already had was re-upholstered using the gorgeous blue velvet. I think it adds just the right amount of glam to this comfortable setting. The loloi rug added a very calm look to the room and guided the rest of the decor. The two comfy swivel chairs and ottoman were custom made to complete the look.
Gorgeous pieces collected on the couple’s world travels were added to the room. They add a personal touch while reminding them of the beautiful journeys together. The existing mixed with some new pieces tied things together and gave this room a very contemporary feel.
The dining room set was also from the existing furniture collection of the owners. However, to match the entire look and feel of the living area, the chairs were upholstered with soft fabric and neutral tones that blend well with the rest of the setup. The orange vase was specially chosen for this table to add a floral romantic ambience to this area.
The owners loved the final setup of their new living space and I am sure they are loving every bit of their time spent in this gorgeous room.
The owners of this home are two lawyers who bought this huge property so they could easily entertain their family and friends. For their master bedroom, they wanted a cozy and relaxing space where they could unwind at the end of the day and enjoy some peaceful reading time.
The alcove created a beautiful space, and looking at it now it almost feels like an obvious choice to have the bed in this corner. But decisions like these come with experience and expertise. Ruthie saw the opportunity in this cut out area in the room. It was decided to custom design a headboard that fit the entire alcove.
Due to its huge size, the entire headboard had to be built inside the room. This design idea has completely changed the look of this room. I love how it visually creates such a relaxing mood.
The room had a very formal tone, so to soften it down transitional furnishings were used to create a soothing comfortable space. The floral printed chairs were found at a re-sale store and re-upholstered to match the mood of the room. It creates a cozy corner for binge watching TV or just a relaxing end-of-the-day catchup.
Some of their kids’ artwork was framed to add a personal touch. Also, the existing chandelier was changed to this stunning cylindrical piece with soft light and beautiful golden trims.
The owners wanted unrestricted views of the garden, so instead of draperies simple drapery panels were added. They create a nice framed view of the lush green spaces outside for the owners to enjoy. The bedside tables were bought from a local vendor, and have a very antique look to them. Their hardware was changed a bit to soften the look and blend in with the setting.
This room looks carefully curated and is a dreamy space for a relaxed evening. The owners were extremely pleased with the end result and loved every bit of it.
This library is a part of the same home as the master bedroom. This two story home library is stuffed with books that are all on display alphabetized. The owners love their books and wanted to create a nice area where they could invite people in and spend quality time together.
The designers got the chairs and ottoman custom made in comfy fabric that is inviting, allows people to put their feet up and relax. The darker top of the ottoman with the beautifully tufted side looks beautiful. The light colored rug adds to the coziness in the room.
The wording that reads library, placed on top of the mantle was custom made from old Reader Digest books. It’s a great way to re-purpose old magazines. The round mirror adds a softer touch to the wooden wall paneling. The entire library has a very authentic look and feel to it, so the soft furnishings do make a difference in creating a friendlier and more welcoming room.
This beautiful antique table was added to the room to create a corner where the family could spend some time together playing games. It serves as a nice entertainment corner for the family, perfect for a game of chess or discussing their latest reads.
Small tweaks to big ideas, interior designers make our lives and home much more interesting than our non-experienced selves can. I hope these ideas can help you custom create your own unique spaces.
