Bustling, frenetic and back for its fifth edition, Design Shanghai brought together a global consortium of over 400 designers and brands showcasing their latest creations. The giant Shanghai Exhibition Centre played host to key headliners from 14-17th March 2018.
It was a crush to get in, with queues snaking their way along the venue gates. Day one opened to over 10,000 people – a record number for Design Shanghai. Inside, the show was divided into five design categories; Contemporary, Collectible, Kitchen and Bathroom, Classic and Luxury, and finally Workplace. Speaking at the fair were a host of design celebrities and visionaries from China and beyond, including Humberto Campana, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, Kelly Hoppen, Yabu Pushenberg, Michael Young, Rabih Hage, Lim + Lu and Paolo Pininfarina.

First on our list was an interview with interior design star Kelly Hoppen. Long recognized for her East-meets-West merging of balance, Hoppen creates designs focused on equilibrium using classic lines and timeless colors. On display was Hoppen’s Retrospective collection, a collaboration with Resource Decor reflecting on the last 40 years of work. The line combines her favorite colors and materials, featuring rose gold, bronze delicately balanced with wood and other natural materials.
We also met with Hong Kong based product designer Michael Young so stay tuned for our interview! His latest collection of Dynasty Vases is a series of limited edition aluminium foam vases created for Gallery All, who also showcase designs from Trent Jansen and Zhipeng Tang. We also met with architect and interior designer Rabih Hage, to talk about his Rough Luxe Hotel and advice for how to design a small apartment.
You can see in our video there were a host of different brands on show; some of our favorites included the lighting from Taiwanese SEED Design, the Wes Anderson-esque blush pink bathroom from Jacob Delafon, and delicate metalwork pieces from Enamel Shi. There were also classic designs from Andrew Martin Home, Swarovski, Carl Hanson and Son, and Qeeboo through to Zaha Hadid Design. With over 1,000 new product launches at the event it’s hard to name them all!
