One of the biggest struggles when it comes to designing a space is the gap between expectation and reality. Imagination can only get you so far. We never know how exactly a room will look until the design is complete. Or can we?
Playing with Virtual Furniture
The main function of Housecraft is to place 3D virtual furniture in your room.
To get started, the app first requires you to scan the floor area of your room. Simply walk around and point your camera towards the floor.
After scanning, tap the ‘Menu’ button and a list of furniture named “Resizable Objects” will pop up. Select the furniture piece of your choice, set its direction, and then tap it once more to have it drop down on the floor vertically. You can repeat these steps to create endless virtual furnishings to decorate the whole room.
After inserting your chosen furniture into your space, feel free to make small changes, such as moving, copying, or even deleting items you don’t like.
The app includes a range of basic furniture. Some of the pieces are even available in multiple design styles, such as modern and classic, enabling people to select one that fits their aesthetic.
To change the color of your chosen furniture item, just click on the arrows! It should, however, be noted that only some of the furniture pieces have this option.
When you’re done, simply walk around with your phone to see your chosen furniture piece from different angles, as if it was actually there in front of you! How fantastic is AR?
Resizing and Copying Furniture
If you’re looking for a more accurate render, try to scale the furniture.
Housecraft lets you change the width, length and height of the virtual furnishings – pretty cool!
The app also lets you copy furniture items you have already placed. An interesting point to note is that when you place furniture pieces in the same place, the app mimics real life and will pile these pieces on top of each other!
Saving Your Layout
Another useful function of this app is its save function. Save various potential layouts using the star button. Saved layouts can be easily found up above the furniture list.
My favorite thing about this app has to be the option of having a video design tour of your finished space. Simply click on the bottom right corner. What a fun feature!
I guess one noticeable disadvantage would be the limited choice of furniture models. It may be difficult to find a unique or special furniture piece from this app. I was also disappointed by the lack of color choices included in the furniture options. These two factors are definitely limiting when it comes to creative design, lowering the rating of the app in my eyes.
In general, I would say Housecraft is a perfectly practical app. Yet of course, there is still much room for improvement. Developers should work on adding new models and color choices to the app – then it would definitely be a worthy competitor to the likes of DecorMatters and Hutch. As it stands however, there are definitely better apps of this type out there.
If you want to give Housecraft a go for yourself. It’s free to download for iOS phone users!
