When it comes to dressing your windows, curtains are a great option for those wanting to add a little texture, color and movement to their space. Curtains lend a room an extra level of sophistication, whilst working in a practical role to provide privacy, block light, and contain warmth. The only downside? Actually getting them up in the first place. To help with that, take a look at our step by step guide to hanging curtains, and I guarantee you’ll be delighting in drapery in no time.
Step One: Measure
Before you do anything, you need to get technical with the measuring tape.
First, you’ll need to determine what length you want the curtain rod to be. To do this, measure the width of the window and then add between eight and 12 inches.
Second, you’ll need to know what size curtains to buy. Measure the length between the position you’ll hang your curtain rod (this is usually 4 to 6 inches above your window frame) and the floor. Add a few extra inches if you want the curtains to pool at the bottom.
Step Two: Fix The Brackets
The brackets should be placed at the same height you want your curtain rod (as determined above). Lengthwise, the brackets should be fixed about 6 inches away from the window frame.
Mark this position on either side with a pencil, making sure they are level. Carefully drill the necessary holes and screw the brackets to the wall.
Step Three: Hang Curtains
After removing the finials, thread your curtain drapes onto the rod.
Secure the curtain rod to the brackets, making sure everything is firmly in place. Finally, make sure to replace the finials on either end.
