When you’re the founder of a multi-million dollar cosmetics empire and the great-grandson of iconic make up artist Max Factor, it’s fair to say that all things beauty is in the blood. It should come as no surprise then to learn that the home of beauty magnate and Smashbox Studios founder, Davis Factor, is pretty easy on the eye. Think oversized glass window walls framing sweeping views of the San Fernando Valley, and a glorious 2,600-square-foot deck-patio-pool area to die for. Let’s take a closer look.
Expansion and Renovation
Work on this 1959 mid-century modern home originally began as a series of site improvements. A new carport here, and the addition of a 500-square-foot gym there. That all changed when the opportunity to purchase the lot next door unexpectedly arose.
All at once, renovation turned to expansion. Enter the experts at (fer) studio, who were tasked with the job of doubling the size of Factor’s property. The expanded estate-type setting now boasts a 2,700 square foot guest house, which is separate but linked to the original property.
Mid-Century Meets Contemporary Glam
The new design takes its cue from the same mid-century inspired structure of the original property, but with a contemporary glam twist. The new addition elevates the classic exposed steel posts and beams with infilled glass windows and sliders. All the better to gawk at those breathtaking valley views.
Factor himself was highly involved in the home’s interior design. Working together with designer Sarah Buxton, the pair decided on a contemporary classic aesthetic. Gray dominates the home, balanced by wood finishes and the occasional neutral accent.
The home feels like a luxury boutique hotel, with its industrial modern gym and spacious bedrooms.
I especially love the integration of art throughout the various spaces. From the discerningly curated gallery wall to the abstract sculptures dotted around the property’s landscaping, these pieces add a refined elegance to the overall look of the home.
When it comes to art, anything goes – even a collection of designer surfboards. Overall, they’re a fun and eclectic addition to the elegant walk-in closet, and makes perfect sense given Factor’s love of surfing.
Whilst there’s a lot to love about the inside spaces, it’s outside where this home really shines. The pool in particular deserves a story of its own, flanked by a sunken terrace and fire pit for when Factor gets tired of all that swimming.
As night falls, watch as the poolside turns into the ultimate Hollywood-approved party venue. Set against the backdrop of those twinkling valley lights, it’s a surefire way to impress even the starriest of guests.
To the side of the home, a nature path designed by Victoria Pakshong leads from the gym and runs along almost the entire width of the property, up the surrounding hillside. It’s the perfect spot for an alfresco workout close to home.
If it’s a home with wow factor you’re after, then you can stop the search right here, right now. Who wouldn’t be impressed by that lavish swimming pool, or those sweeping 180 degree views? What’s more, proving beauty is more than skin (or exterior) deep, the interior lives up to all the promises of its outdoor counterpart, with a sleek aesthetic that discreetly exudes understated luxury. Consider us thoroughly spellbound.
