Library

With its abundance of natural light, contemporary custom furniture, and Anish Kapoor art pieces, this living room turned minimalist library is a design enthusiast’s dream. Located in Sao Paulo, it was designed by Pascali Semerdjian Architects for a creative, art-loving couple. Let’s take a closer look.

Contemporary Simplicity

Wood panel walls and swathes of white set the stage for a calming minimalist aesthetic. Though simple, the overall look is visually striking thanks to the glass shelves and curated collection of Anish Kapoor art. This space looks more like a contemporary gallery than the typical dusty library.

“The inspiration was to have a minimalistic and calm space. We wanted to make the library a perfect space for someone to concentrate on reading and working.”

Tailor Made

The majority of the featured furniture was developed exclusively for the library by Pascali Semerdjian Architects. Contemporary in style, the influence of Brazil’s rich design past is nevertheless present in the smooth lines and wood textures.

The custom furnishings went down so well with their clients, Pascali Semerdjian Architects later released these pieces as a collection in collaboration with top Brazilian brand, Etel Interiores.

Additional furniture piecese were selected from Giulio Cappellini, Front Design, and Werner Aisslinger to complete the look.

Away From The World

Although the library is connected to the main house, Pascali Semerdjian Architects have made it feel like a self-contained space. Notice how the doors to the library are seamlessly integrated into the wood panel walls? They’re camouflaged in a way which maintains visual continuity, helping to create a sense of isolation and introspection.

“The major difficulty was to make the project happen inside the budget we had. So we had to detail and think about everything carefully so we would have no surprises.”

Final Thoughts

Forget cluttered shelves and dark heavy furnishings, Pascali Semerdjian Architects have redefined the library for contemporary minimalist living — and I love every inch of it.

The open layout and natural light are not only easy on the eyes, but conducive to productivity too. What’s more, the addition of sculptures and thoughtfully-designed furnishings (themselves pieces of art in my opinion!), elevates this space to inspirational heights. All in all, whether you need to hit the books or just prefer some quiet down time, its calm simplicity makes this library the perfect location.

What do you think of this minimalist library?
