From a distance, this modern home sticks out from the rest of the homes along the street in Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie. Its striking roof is clad in gray, unlike its brick-walled neighbors. What used to be an old brick duplex has now been converted into a contemporary glass home, ever since a design-focused couple and their two children turned this space into their permanent residence.
With a fondness for minimal design, the family sought out _naturehumaine, a Montreal-based studio known for their modern approach to architecture. The brief was simple, transform the cramp duplex into a spacious home that brings in plenty of light.
The building’s boring brick facade was replaced with big windows and glass screens, spanning both floors. Paired with white walls, the open plan living space welcomes a generous amount of light that reaches all the way to the kitchen.
Inside, the family room is clean and minimal, combining gray, white and wooden elements. The dining table is supported by wooden legs that echo the glass screen frames.
Concealed doors can be found behind the dining area and across the kitchen space, making room for plenty of items to stay hidden from view. The kitchen features a black and white palette, with a touch of marble in the countertop.
The staircase is one of the home’s key features. It’s interesting to see marbled steps leading up to a wooden landing, which visually tie the staircase to the kitchen.
The steps continue upward in a curved angle, framed with white perforated steel that match the rest of the house. The staircase itself sits directly under a glass covered opening, illuminating the entire area.
The family was excited to move into their new home – one they feel reflects them. From its sleek exterior to bright open spaces within the home, this contemporary glass house is truly the result of a successful transformation.
