She's always struck by the architecture of a building. Originally from London, she is enthralled with the majestic collection of curves and lines that make up the British capital. It's fascinating to see how modern skyscrapers and historic landmarks muddle together in every city. Her Instagram feed is full of spiral staircases.

Young parents Magda and Kamil dreamed of a space full of light; a kitchen elegant enough for adult tastes and robust enough for family activities. This white kitchen project from NOreststudio is the result of their latest home renovation. They’ve transformed the space into an open plan kitchen and dining room that has become the heart of the home.

The apartment is in a historic building in KrakowPoland. Inside, the style is contemporary, with bright Scandinavian-style interiors. The wooden floors are a neutral tone that work well within the grayscale color scheme. From white cabinetry to black chairs and lighting, it’s all tied together with those softer mid-range tones and a marble backsplash. The ultimate effect of all these white colors and materials is to make the room feel warmer and brighter.

The kitchen is fully equipped with plenty of storage. These pull out drawers are particularly useful as they can store a lot. While it’s important to make sure the kitchen has all the things a kitchen needs, it is also within the line of sight from the living room, therefore it was a balance to also make sure it didn’t look overly functional. As the soul of the home, it feels like you can spend time here in both a formal and casual setting.

The white kitchen island was one of the features suggested by design team NOreststudio. They built it with a connecting table at a similar height, allowing for family dinners. With this intention they created a space that functions as the heart of the home.

Fusing the elements together makes it all work as one grand piece of furniture, rather than looking disconnected and imposing on each other’s function. The chairs are sleek, with round features that stand out particularly against the sharp lines of the table.

Overall, it’s a great kitchen for a small family apartment. One of the best places for a sink is on an island or corner where people can talk to you while you’re doing the dishes, much more interesting than staring at the wall. There’s plenty of worktop space, and the gas cooker is suited to heavy duty cooking. The ventilation hood is set into the cupboards which tucks it out of sight.

The open plan area creates a shared dynamic of eating and living together. It’s almost unavoidable these days to have some kind of open plan shared space in contemporary apartments, but the key is to make the rooms flow together well. Flooring is consistent and so are the types of materials and furnishings used in the rest of the room.

Unique and quirky, we love the geometric pattern frame that creates a striking and uplifting feature wall that gives vivacity to the room. Magda is an artist, and it is fitting to see patterns and vigor on the walls of the apartment. With sunlight streaming in from the glorious balcony, soft furnishings and the friendly texture of the kitchen surfaces, this is a family home for all of them. What a stunning change for this kitchen renovation!
